Treatments For An Inner Ear Disorder.

Standard Treatments For An Inner Ear Disorder

For all inner ear or vestibular disorders it is recommended to stick to a low salt caffeine free diet. Often too much sugar in a diet will trigger your dizziness as well.

Menieres Disease or Endolymphatic Hydrops

If your doctor suspects that you may have Menieres Disease or Endolymphatic Hydrops its likely he or she will first prescribe diuretics to help eliminate excess fluid retention along with the low salt diet. Often your doctor will prescribe diuretics to help eliminate the fluids from your ear.

In the past few years another treatment for Menieres The Menietts Device has found to be very helpful. The Meniett Device

Often medications such as Serc or meclizine "antivert" will be prescribed to help with the vertigo or spinning sensation brought on by most types of inner ear disorders.

Benzo drugs such as valium and xanax have been very helpful fo many. What they do is desensitize the nerve endings in the inner ear so in return we feel less dizzy or unbalanced.

At times ear tubes or shunts can be inserted into the inner ear to help with the pressure and fluid build up.

In server cases the eight nerve of the canal can be partially or totally destroyed.

Perilymph Fistula

If you are diagnosed with a Perilymph Fistula, which is a tear in the inner ear caused by a blow or sudden pressure changes to the inner ear the treatment is bed rest. In most cases this will heal the tear. If bed rest does not eliminate the symptoms surgery can be done to repair the tear.

BPPV (Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo)

The treatment for BPPV (Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo) Is called the epley maneuver. When you have BPPV tiny calcium crystals or ear rocks become loose in the inner ear and with the help of the epley they can be put back into place which often relives your symptoms.

The epley is a fairly simple procedure that can be done right in the doctors office. After the procedure you need to remain upright for up to 48 hours to give the ear rocks a chance to settle back into place.

In recent studies they are finding that in some cases the epley doesn't work the first time because the ear rocks are hidden in other parts of the ear canal, so they are now doing the epley with your head in different positions to make sure they get all the ear rocks out.

Tinnitus

Recent studies have found that botox injection are helping to relive the symptoms of Tinnitus which is ringing in the ear or ears.

Vestibular Therapy

Vestibular Therapy has also been helpful for many people with inner ear disorders. The therapy can cause your symptoms to be worse at the start, but if this should happen please try to continue with it as this is a good sign that your vestibular system is responding and over time your symptoms will improve.

Autoimmune Inner Ear Disorder (AIED)

The treatment for people who have been diagnosed with an Autoimmune Inner Ear Disorder is a combination of medications which include either methotrexate or cytoxan which are both oral chemo drugs along with a steriod such as prednisone. This treatment is still in trial bases.

Panic and Anxiety

Since panic and anxiety can often be brought on by living with this disorder, some people have found the use of antidepressants helpful in getting this part of the disorder under control which has given them a better quality of life.

Alternative Treatments

Below are some of the alternative treatments used to treat or control the symptoms of an inner ear or vestibular disorder.

If you are considering giving one of the homeopathic drugs a try please keep in mind that alternative medications can intereact with some of the RX's medications that you may be taking.

Alternative or natural medications can also have side effects and need to be taken as directed. So all things considered it is always best to check with your doctor before starting any new treatment or medication.
